What has been your path to power?
My path has been a kaleidoscope, with over two decades worth of pan-industry experiences interwoven by the desire to achieve end-user impact, be that for customers, citizens or patients. I have had the pleasure of working across the following domains: consumer goods, retail, pharmaceutical, manufacturing, utility and health and care. I have inevitably found myself leading large teams and delivering large scale change through the implementation of new operating models in complex and challenging environments in Europe, North America and South East Asia.
I joined the NHS in October 2009, initially leading commissioning support services in the West Midlands as the managing director for Healthcare Commissioning Services and then as the managing director for South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Commissioning Support Unit.
I am now the interim chief data and analytics officer for NHS England and NHS Improvement and am responsible for the strategic development and national implementation of data and analytics products and capability across the NHS. The team I lead provides NHS England and NHS Improvement with the resources to support system transformation, strategic information assets, digital tools and analyses to underpin policy development and predictive capabilities to enhance decision-making and improve health and care services.
What impact has the pandemic had on the role of data in your company/organisation?
The pandemic has provided a new lens through which we view the way healthcare is delivered, and what can be achieved when we collaborate across various government agencies and form strong industry partnerships while using a common data platform and developing an insights-rich health and care economy.
Consolidating Covid-19 data has allowed us to use that data to develop tools and dashboards to give decision-makers more timely and accurate visibility into the status of the response. We have used the data to develop tools that forecast the impact of the virus on scarce resources and identify the interventions to mitigate this, helping to make informed and effective decisions. We have also used national data effectively to support clinical research to understand more about the virus and the impact of vaccinations, treatments and population immunity.
