Al Mathie, Chief Data Officer, NFU Mutual

Al Mathie is Chief Data Officer at NFU Mutual, where he leads the organisation’s data and technology agenda with a focus on strategy, transformation and measurable business impact.

He has spent most of his career in the insurance sector, working both within insurers and in consulting roles providing advisory and delivery capabilities. Throughout this time, Al’s work has centred on data and technology strategy, giving him broad exposure to different operating models, business challenges, and leadership styles. That breadth of experience has shaped a pragmatic approach grounded in understanding the business context and maintaining a clear line of sight between investment decisions and the outcomes that matter most.

Al joined NFU Mutual as Chief Data Officer where his responsibilities span setting the data strategy, securing investment, delivering programmes at pace, demonstrating value and benefits, managing risk, and building and motivating high-performing teams. He balances the role of subject matter expert with the ability to influence and engage stakeholders, ensuring the data agenda is understood, supported and adopted across the organisation.

Al places particular importance on assembling strong teams capable of turning vision into reality, and on aligning data and technology initiatives to the strategic direction of the business. He has maintained emphasis on using data and technology as enablers of transformation, helping organisations move the dial on performance, resilience, and long-term value.

As a data and AI leader, which traits and skills do you think matter most, and which of those have been most influential for you in your current position?

“From my perspective being a data professional is no longer enough to be an effective data leader. You need a broad range of data and technology awareness and understanding, coupled with a solid understanding of the business you operate within, its strategy, and how data will move the dial on key performance metrics.

“The ability to articulate ‘what, why, how, when’ in clear business language is probably the most effective capability any data leader needs or should be developing. The ability to translate detail and complexity into clear, understandable messages that Exco’s and Board’s get and buy into is what helps data leaders succeed. This is where I focus my development and growth.”

Reflecting on your career, what is one non-traditional piece of advice (outside of technical skills) you would give to an aspiring data or AI leader aiming for the C-suite?

“Be varied, broaden your horizons, and become well rounded. Do roles outside of data to understand the business. Do roles that interest you, you enjoy, and you can make a difference in.

“Ask yourself why you really want a C-suite role, you might find that’s not actually what you want. If you do want to get there build a network, learn from others, find a coach or mentor, be prepared to move.”
