I have spent my 20-plus-year career primarily in business leadership roles at Capital One, a bank that serves more than 100 million customers and was founded on the idea that data and analytics should drive core business decisions. My roles have included leading the Loyalty and Rewards program, strengthening customer advocacy and digital engagement; Head of International and CEO of Capital One UK, leading all aspects of that business; Head of Capital One’s Navigator Platform, which aims to simplify the car buying experience; as well as several roles leading marketing, underwriting, and product development in credit card and lending businesses.
Several years ago, I moved into a Product- and Technology-focused role as Chief Data Officer. I use my knowledge of the business to lead a team building and managing the data platforms and products that make up Capital One’s data ecosystem, driving data management practices across the company.
At Capital One, we have done a lot of great work across our data ecosystem. There are two recent highlights that underscore foundational ways we are helping our business unlock insights, make critical decisions, and create value for our millions of customers with data:
- We have been driving the convergence to centralized enterprise data platforms across the entire company. This has served a whole range of needs across the company – from strengthening data management through automation to enabling AI capabilities and use cases at scale.
- We are continuing to build and launch high-quality data products, which allow teams across the company to more easily access high quality data they need to push the business forward.
I believe we are at the stage where more companies will realize that they are limited in what they can achieve with AI and analytics because of shortfalls in their data ecosystem. These companies will look to their data leaders to help them unlock and deliver on the full potential of AI and advanced technologies. I also believe we will see more of a focus on having the infrastructure in place that allows organizations to take action on the insights they glean from data analysis.
I truly believe that getting your organization’s data ready to fuel AI and drive real business outcomes is not just a single project. It is a way of life – one that will evolve over time and that will require stewardship from data leaders who can help foster a data-driven culture and practices that can evolve as technology and business needs evolve.
