Caroline Bellamy, Chief Data & AI Officer, Deputy CIO, Ministry of Defence

Caroline Bellamy is Chief Data and AI Officer and Deputy CIO at the UK Ministry of Defence, where she leads the organisation’s data and AI agenda across one of the most complex and mission-critical environments in government.

Her career was launched at the very start of the digital and data revolution, including a formative grounding at dunnhumby in its earliest days. That experience instilled core principles around customer-centricity, analytical rigour and the commercial application of data that continue to shape her leadership today. Driven by curiosity, ambition and a strong desire to learn, Caroline has built a career spanning consulting, retail, utilities, telecommunications and defence, working across FTSE 100 organisations in the UK and internationally.

This breadth of experience has given her a diverse perspective on how digital and data can be used to drive better decisions and outcomes across very different operating contexts. While technology and analytics have advanced dramatically over the course of her career, Caroline has remained steadfast in her belief that people and skills are the most critical enablers of success.

At the Ministry of Defence, Caroline has helped elevate digital and data to be recognised as a strategic asset, second only to people in importance. Her work has focused on embedding data and AI at the heart of decision-making, strengthening capability and culture, and ensuring these tools are used responsibly in support of national security objectives.

Caroline is known for combining strategic vision with a strong people-first ethos, championing the development of skills and inclusive teams as the foundation for sustainable data and AI-driven transformation.

As a data and AI leader, which traits and skills do you think matter most, and which of those have been most influential for you in your current position?

“My passion, curiosity, drive, and energy are enduring. However, I am increasingly tested as we face the headwinds of financial and resource constraints and, an increasingly volatile global threat surface.

“I have learnt that this builds what we need most: resilience and adaptability. To quote a great colleague ‘persistence and patience’.

“You need a good dose of humility and the ability to listen, partner, and adapt; outcome is the focus, not our profession. Personal integrity and ethics are core as data, digital, tech, and AI advances, so we must direct and use these amazing resources in the right way.”

Reflecting on your career, what is one non-traditional piece of advice (outside of technical skills) you would give to an aspiring data or AI leader aiming for the C-suite?

“There is not one route to the ‘top’. Build on your passions and have balance in your life as that is where your energy comes from; keep your batteries charged.

“Increasing seniority will call on your energy reserves, so be adaptable, be curious, and work to forge partnerships and networks. Remember that to lead people is a privilege; keep a focus on your team and help them achieve their goals.”
