Dan Robertson, Chief Data and Analytics Officer, Bupa

Describe your career to date

My career has taken me from spreadsheets, data marts, OLAP and warehouses to big data, lakes and clouds. It has taken me from developer, designer, project manager and architect to head of data, CDO and CDAO. It has taken me from software houses and consultancies to blue chips, in local roles and global roles. And all the time with data at the heart.

What stage has your organisation reached on its data maturity journey?

I am one year in at my current organisation. We have set a clear vision for data and analytics and are now embarking on a significant transformation. Our starting point was low data maturity, but we are starting to climb upwards.

Tell us about the data and analytics resources you are responsible for

I am currently forming the data office for the organisation, which has a leadership team of seven centrally, plus around five federated roles that lead data and analytics in the business units. My report is up to the chief transformation and operations officer, but a number of my leadership team and their teams are in IT. In total, I lead about 50 central resources, with over double that amount in the business units.

What challenges do you see for data in the year ahead that will have an impact on your organisation and on the industry as a whole?

Global recession, skills availability, data fluency and data security are some of the key challenges we and the industry face as a whole. Recession challenges require a refocus on how to leverage data to provide even better value and experience for our customers; skills and fluency continues to be a challenge and we need to establish how to attract, develop and retain the right skills, while also raising the fluency levels across our organisation. Security continues to be a challenge; data continues to increase in value on the dark web and we need to make sure we are protecting it better than ever before.

Have you set out a vision for data? If so, what is it aiming for and does it embrace the whole organisation or just the data function?

Our organisation data and analytics vision is to make the needs and wants of our customers at the centre of our data-driven decisions and actions – which in turn needs to help us to meet our corporate vision to become the world’s most customer centric healthcare organisation. This embraces the whole organisation

Have you been able to fix the data foundations of your organisation, particularly with regard to data quality?

We are on a journey to fix the data foundations of our organisation. Our business are steadily taking on the role of data trustees while our data governance centre of excellence helps guide them by establishing repeatable, scalable controls and processes for data quality, data cleansing, retention, lineage, cataloguing etc. It is another journey, but an incredibly important one which is being brought to life by linking the value of the data to enable prioritisation of governance activities.
