Please describe your career to date

I would reflect that the most valuable and insightful experience has been the opportunity to take a zig-zag path, whether across employers, geographic, or organisation boundaries. This path has given me experience with suppliers and buyers across countries and continents, within digital, IT, and various business functions. I have found that in this journey, it is possible to find business and data related opportunities hiding in plain sight, particularly at these interfaces. Personally, this last year has been another huge learning experience for me in a new energy domain, and where I have found a whole new set of opportunities.

Data literacy is a key enabler of the value and impact from data. How are you approaching this within your organisation?

Through our membership with DataIQ, we plan to utilise the virtual training opportunities to upskill individuals on a range of data related topics, complemented by a series of internal communities of practices to support data related conversations. The landscape is changing quickly with access to things like generative AI, so we have also introduced internal services, learning offers, and an updated policy to ensure we can take full advantage while running safe and reliable operations.

Have you set out a vision for data? If so, what is it aiming for and does it embrace the whole organisation or just the data function?

We have kept things simple here: Our vision is to make data our superpower. I think this is a concept that is engaging and sufficiently ambitious for what we need to do.  With this stance we can develop the frontier techniques that we need to be at the heart of a clean, fair and affordable energy future, and to have the greatest positive impact for customers and wider society.
