Lauren Sager Weinstein is Chief Data Officer at Transport for London (TfL), bringing together a long-standing interest in data and technology with a deep commitment to helping cities thrive. Coming from a family of engineers, she developed an early affinity for technical problem-solving, alongside a strong passion for public policy and management. Her career spans senior roles across the public sector on both sides of the Atlantic.
Lauren began her career in the United States, working for the City of Los Angeles, where she helped shape the development of the Fairfax–Melrose neighbourhood. This experience sharpened her focus on transport, recognising the critical role transport networks play in shaping urban form and enabling cities to function effectively. She went on to complete a Master’s degree in Public Policy, with a focus on transportation and analytical tools, before joining the then newly created Transport for London.
At TfL, Lauren held a wide range of roles, gradually gravitating towards technology and data. She played a pivotal role in launching TfL’s groundbreaking Contactless Payment system, transforming how customers pay for travel in London and influencing transport payment systems globally. Through this work, she recognised the power of operational and customer data to improve how transport networks are planned and run.
As TfL’s first Chief Data Officer, Lauren built the organisation’s data function from the ground up, establishing data as a strategic asset for the organisation. Today, she is focused on leading the responsible adoption of AI to address new challenges and further enhance London’s transport system.
As a data and AI leader, which traits and skills do you think matter most, and which of those have been most influential for you in your current position?
“As a leader, my role is to shape the focus of my talented and dedicated team and colleagues to work on the most valuable opportunities in data and AI for Transport for London’s network. I believe that my enthusiasm for our mission of public service (I am endlessly fascinated by what we do) and my excitement for identifying new problems to solve, shapes my leadership style.
“I also really value the culture that we have built within our team as we have developed a team that shares this passion for public service and for operating with creativity and kindness.”
Reflecting on your career, what is one non-traditional piece of advice (outside of technical skills) you would give to an aspiring data or AI leader aiming for the C-suite?
“For me, loving the intricate nature of the work that I do (admittedly I am both a transport and a data geek) and being rewarded by knowing how it can have an impact is fundamental. It creates my leadership spark, and so when I have coaching conversations with aspiring leaders, I talk about finding this passion and being bold in ambition to build new data solutions and solve problems that make life better.”
