Marion Shaw, Head of Data and Analytics, Chaucer Group

Describe your career to date

The first 27 years of my career were spent working in the localisation industry, translating software documentation and related material, into foreign languages. As part of this, I have been a software engineer and tester, a project manager, an account manager, a public sector tender writer, a process improver, and a data expert.

Working across such varied roles on complex projects gave me a solid foundation on which to build my data career and has provided me with a unique insight into how data integrates cross-division, cross-border, and cross-industry. It also equipped me with excellent and invaluable logic and problem-solving skills.

I joined Chaucer Group in 2022 as a Data Leader. Since then, I have had the pleasure of supporting, listening to, and learning from all parts of the business.

I am an active member of the data community and promote data as being both an exciting industry to work in and one that can provide a good work-life balance.

Alongside working on improving the morale in my team, my focus has been on opening as many avenues as possible into data within Chaucer and increasing diversity by using unconventional channels like apprentice roles and career changes. This enables people to understand that you do not need a science or maths degree to join the data community and gives a wider range of people the opportunity to become involved.

I regularly speak at events and conferences and advocate for more women to attend, participate, and present. I believe as data leaders we need to be visible and lead from the front, even if this is uncomfortable to do. It is hard to effect change, but we need to normalise it by doing it.

I was the first female chairperson at the Data Collective events and have signed up to chair the next one. I believe it is good for women to see that we can chair events, lead discussions, and be visible. We need more women to step up and pave the way and support others to do so.

Data literacy is a key enabler of the value and impact from data. How are you approaching this within your organisation?

I created Chaucer’s first data strategy and had version one unanimously approved by the Board. This has had a big impact on the data ecosystem and has paved the way for a data transformation programme, which is positively impacting the entire business. We are building a data culture that is encouraging more of the business users to be data curious and become more involved.

I have also embarked on an ambitious data culture and data literacy campaign in Chaucer. We have started by completing the DataIQ Data Literacy Survey and from the results have tailored phase one of a program which will be rolled out across the company.

Recently, I supported one of our reception staff to move into the data industry. She had shown an interest in data, so I supported her learning and development, and I am delighted to say she has recently joined my team as a Data Champion. She will support the data strategy and data fluency programme by communicating into the business and being the face of data. We will be upskilling her so that she can develop into a Data Analyst. I believe that she will be an amazing asset to the data community. We need to give women as many avenues as possible into the industry and to develop their skills once on board.

We also held the first ever Data Day in Chaucer, as part of our annual innovation week celebration. This was a day dedicated to data and getting our message out to the company. We had external speakers, internal activities, and team events. It really brought the company together and elevated the data strategy, culture, and programme across all departments.

Have you set out a vision for data? If so, what is it aiming for and does it embrace the whole organisation or just the data function?

The data strategy has been approved at both the Board and C-levels in Chaucer. It has been presented to the entire company, as I believe that everyone has a role to play in data; regardless of where they work or what they do in the business, people can and will influence and shape our data. It is important that the company understands what our data strategy is and how it underpins the business.

Our mission in the data and analytics team is to provide trusted data that is easy to use and understand. This means that we need to work with the whole organisation to ensure that data is processed in a streamlined way through all our processes and systems.

We are involving the entire organisation in our data maturity journey. The data team cannot be successful without buy-in from the organisation. I want everyone to be comfortable with their role in data. People appear to be comfortable with personal data on their smartphones, but when it transfers to corporate data, they lose that level of comfort. I aim to give them back that comfort so that they can be truly data driven and can support Chaucer on our journey to be data driven.
