As a data and AI leader, which traits and skills do you think matter most, and which of those have been most influential for you in your current position?
“Curiosity and a willingness to learn are essential. This field evolves quickly, and staying ahead means embracing new ideas and technologies.
“Communication and influence are just as important as technical skills. The ability to translate complex concepts for diverse audiences is critical, especially with colleagues from different areas of the business who may not have a data and AI background.
“Taking full ownership is critical. This means not just ownership of strategy and results, but also of people, culture, and partnerships that make success possible. It’s about being an intentional and visible leader.
“In our organization, resilience and collaboration have been especially influential. Navigating ambiguity and working across boundaries have enabled us to deliver on ambitious goals.”
Reflecting on your career, what is one non-traditional piece of advice (outside of technical skills) you would give to an aspiring data or AI leader aiming for the C-suite?
“Invest in building relationships and understanding the broader business context. Success in data and AI is as much about people and partnerships as it is about technology.
“Don’t be afraid to ask questions or challenge the status quo. Some of the best ideas come from those willing to see things differently.
“Above all, lead with empathy. Understanding the needs and motivations of your team and stakeholders is what drives lasting impact.
“Culture matters. As a leader, it’s important to remember that people around you are not just listening to what you say but are watching what you do. You must embody the culture you want to see across your team.”
