Osman Peermamode, Director, Data & Analytics, Vodafone

Osman Peermamode is Director of Data and Analytics at Vodafone, where he leads the global data, AI and cloud strategy across a highly complex, multinational organisation.

He brings extensive experience across telecommunications, technology, and finance, with a track record of driving large-scale business transformation through data-driven strategies. Osman began his career as an engineer, grounding him in how systems operate in practice and how theoretical solutions are tested by scale, cost and organisational realities. This foundation has shaped a pragmatic approach focused on delivery as much as innovation.

At Vodafone, Osman has unified global and local operating companies under a single data and AI strategy and built a data organisation of more than 500 professionals. He has led initiatives spanning AI-driven customer service, predictive analytics and cloud transformation, delivering measurable improvements in customer experience and operational efficiency. His work in data governance and process optimisation has been recognised internally, including being named Vodafone’s Best Innovator.

Prior to Vodafone, Osman led business intelligence across EMEA and India at Apple, where his work contributed to more than $10 billion in sales growth and a 10% reduction in operational costs. Earlier, at Cisco, he delivered transformation programmes across cash management and treasury functions.

Across his career, Osman has shifted focus from building analytics to enabling outcomes, shaped by both successes and stalled initiatives. He is known for emphasising trust, timeliness and clear decision linkage, and for recognising that leadership, culture, and incentives are often the determining factors in whether data delivers value at scale.

As a data and AI leader, which traits and skills do you think matter most, and which of those have been most influential for you in your current position?

“The most important traits in data and AI leadership are judgement and an obsession with value creation. Knowing when to push, when to simplify, and when to stop is far more valuable than technical brilliance alone.

“Closely linked, is the ability to influence without authority. Data leaders operate across silos, often without direct control, so credibility, clarity, and empathy matter enormously. Being able to listen and reframe problems in business language has been one of the most influential skills that my Data & Analytics Leadership team has mastered.

“Another critical skill is comfort with ambiguity. AI evolves quickly, and leaders must make decisions with imperfect information, balancing risk and opportunity. Those who wait for certainty tend to fall behind.

“In my experience, the traits that have had the greatest impact are pragmatism and consistency. Teams and executives need to trust that data leaders will deliver incrementally. Repeatedly showing value, even in small ways, builds momentum and permission to do bigger things.

“Finally, resilience matters. Data and AI initiatives attract scrutiny and scepticism. The ability to absorb pressure, learn from setbacks, and keep moving forward is essential for sustained impact.

Reflecting on your career, what is one non-traditional piece of advice (outside of technical skills) you would give to an aspiring data or AI leader aiming for the C-suite?

“Logic and models matter, but what separates great data leaders is their ability to build trust, read the room, and help others succeed under real-world pressure.

“Many aspiring data leaders believe that logic, evidence, and better models will win the day. In reality, decisions are shaped by incentives, fear, timing, and personal credibility, just as much as facts. Ignoring this doesn’t make you principled but it makes you ineffective.    Invest time in understanding what keeps your executives awake at night, what success means to them personally, and how decisions are actually made under pressure. Build trust before you need it. Choose your battles carefully.

“Equally important: don’t define your value by being the smartest person in the room. The C-suite rewards those who enable others to look good, move faster, and make confident decisions.

“Mastering this human layer is often what differentiate excellent data leaders from others.”
