Ozgur Dogan, Co-Founder, President, Americas, Blend

Ozgur Dogan is Co-Founder and President, Americas at Blend, where he leads regional growth and the application of data, analytics, and AI to drive business outcomes. His career began in data science before the discipline was widely defined, building early customer churn models using neural networks well ahead of their mainstream adoption. This experience shaped his enduring belief that the value of AI lies not in model complexity, but in its ability to influence real business decisions.

Throughout his career, Ozgur has focused on translating data and emerging technologies into measurable impact, from improving customer retention to optimizing operations and enabling new growth opportunities. He has consistently emphasized the importance of moving beyond experimentation, embedding AI into the core of how organizations operate and compete.

Ozgur is equally focused on building high-performing teams, combining technical expertise with a strong, aligned culture. He believes the most effective data organizations are those where curiosity, accountability, and business acumen are as important as technical skill.

His leadership reflects a balance of pragmatism and ambition, ensuring that innovation is grounded in enterprise value and that AI delivers sustained impact at scale.

As a data and AI leader, which traits and skills do you think matter most, and which of those have been most influential for you in your current position?

“Effective data and AI leadership today is defined less by static expertise and more by the ability to navigate constant change. The most critical traits are agility, the capacity to learn quickly, comfort with uncertainty, and a deep sense of curiosity, particularly the ability to ask the right questions.

“As the pace of innovation accelerates, leaders must continuously evolve their own understanding while enabling their teams to do the same. Learning fast is no longer optional; it’s a core competency. This goes hand-in-hand with agility, the ability to pivot strategies, adopt new technologies, and respond to shifting business needs without losing momentum.

“Equally important is the ability to operate in ambiguity. Data and AI initiatives often involve unproven approaches and evolving outcomes, so leaders must be comfortable making decisions without perfect information and guiding their teams through uncertainty with clarity and confidence.

“Curiosity underpins all of this. The most effective leaders don’t just seek answers; they challenge assumptions, ask better questions, and push for deeper insights that unlock real value.

“In my organization, these traits have been foundational. They’ve enabled us to stay ahead of rapid change, foster a culture of continuous learning, and consistently translate emerging AI capabilities into meaningful business impact.”

Reflecting on your career, what is one non-traditional piece of advice (outside of technical skills) you would give to an aspiring data or AI leader aiming for the C-suite?

“Choose work that genuinely excites you. In a field evolving as quickly as data and AI, sustained success doesn’t come from technical skill alone; it comes from passion.

“When you’re deeply interested in what you’re building, learning stops feeling like an obligation and becomes something you actively seek out. The long hours, constant change, and complexity of the space become far more manageable, and even energizing, because you’re driven by curiosity and purpose, not just outcomes.

“That passion also shows up in how you lead. It’s contagious. Teams are far more engaged when they see authentic enthusiasm and belief in the work.

“Ultimately, if you find something you truly enjoy, work doesn’t feel like work, and it becomes something you want to keep pushing forward. In a space that demands continuous growth, that mindset is a powerful advantage.”
