Pankaj Chopra, Vice President and Head, Analytics and Insights, Mondelez International

Describe your career to date

I have had the privilege of working with industry giants like Procter & Gamble, Johnson & Johnson, and now Mondelez, spanning nine countries across Asia, Europe, and the US. Over the years I have evolved as a data and analytics professional by taking up challenging assignments, progressively taking on bigger responsibilities and continuing to educate myself by learning on the job and going back to school at UCLA, UC Berkely, and MIT.

As a seasoned leader in data, analytics, and insights, I specialize in driving digital and analytics transformations – starting with setting up a strong data foundation. My expertise includes crafting robust data strategies, implementing intelligent automation in analysis and reporting, and fostering the development of impactful business applications.

Noteworthy achievements include leveraging both unstructured and structured data to derive real-time consumer and shopper insights; pioneering a risk-sensing solution that preemptively identifies internal and external risks, thereby safeguarding millions in revenue; and architecting intelligent reporting systems capable of diagnosing business issues, proposing solutions, and forecasting future challenges. I have led the creation of a master-data product pivotal for optimizing procurement and supply chain operations.

Beyond technical achievements, I am deeply committed to driving organizational and cultural transformations. This involves charting comprehensive roadmaps, securing strategic investments, nurturing talent through upskilling and recruitment, and leading change management efforts to ensure successful adoption of transformative technologies and processes. My career has been defined by a relentless pursuit of excellence, innovation, and impactful leadership, and I look forward to continuing to drive positive change in the industry.

I am a faculty at Rutgers Business School and use this opportunity to develop young talent and pay forward.

How are you developing the data literacy of your organization, including the skills of your data teams and of your business stakeholders?

The role of data is crucial in driving any digital transformation and building useful data products and applications. However, in most organizations this is not very explicit. Hence, I have been driving data literacy within my organization at different levels, including with organization leadership, data practitioners, and the entire workforce who are generally users of several applications.

At the leadership level, my focus has been on educating leaders about the essential role of data as the foundation for analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), and generative AI (genAI) capabilities. This involves emphasizing the need to invest in data, driving business cases that highlight the critical role of data and thereby gaining visible support and necessary resources for these workstreams.

We have developed a comprehensive roadmap, shared it across the organization, and established the right structure while hiring the appropriate talent. This highlights the importance of a strong data strategy and management, lending credibility to our organization’s data-centric focus.

I have established a data governance council that provides regular updates to top leadership, showcasing the progress made and how a robust data foundation facilitates analytics, automation, and AI. This firsthand demonstration is crucial for the organization to recognize the importance of data and its role in driving development.

I have implemented a Data and Analytics Council, focusing on running training programs and webinars for basic data education and sharing best data management practices. These initiatives benefit both direct and indirect stakeholders, fostering a better understanding and appreciation of data across teams. We consistently leverage our data vendor partners to conduct regular training programs across the organization, helping to upskill our workforce effectively.

As part of annual objectives, my team members are encouraged to obtain formal certifications in data management, strategy, quality, stewardship, and more, and attend industry conferences to stay updated on advancements in the field.

Driving data literacy across the organization requires a multifaceted approach, encompassing various initiatives that work cohesively to foster a culture of data literacy within the organization.

Have you set out a vision for data? If so, what is it aiming for and does it embrace the whole organization or just the data function?

Having successfully led data and analytics transformations at Johnson & Johnson, I joined Mondelez to spearhead a digital transformation anchored in a visionary approach to data, analytics, and the establishment of AI and genAI capabilities. Mondelez was starting their journey in this area and hence establishing and aligning this vision was critical for success. As I started, my primary focus was crafting, enrolling and disseminating a comprehensive data vision, recognizing its vital role as the lifeblood of the organization and gaining strong leadership support to implement the vision. Central to this vision is harnessing data as a strategic asset, driving organizational success by mining, analyzing, and leveraging insights to optimize processes and unearth new opportunities. Furthermore, democratizing data access and nurturing a data-driven culture across all levels of the organization are integral components.

My data strategy rests on three pillars:

  • Establishing a unified data governance team with end-to-end responsibility to spearhead this vision.

  • Implementing a harmonized data layer based on the FAIR principle to enable this vision.

  • Prioritizing data optimization and cost management so that this workstream impacts both the top-line and the bottom-line for the business.

Emphasizing data governance, quality, stewardship, privacy, and security is paramount amid the escalating volume and complexity of generated data. Robust governance frameworks ensure data integrity, compliance, and alignment with regulations.

Ultimately, my vision seeks to transform organizations into agile, data-driven entities adept at navigating market dynamics and harnessing data as a catalyst for innovation, growth, and competitive advantage.
