Patrick Duroseau, Vice President Enterprise Data Management and Analytics, Under Armour

Describe your career to date

In my role as Vice President of Enterprise Data Management and Analytics at Under Armour, I have embraced the challenge of pioneering an entirely new domain within the company. Since my appointment in 2020, I have been at the forefront of establishing and executing a comprehensive Global Data and Analytics Strategy, recognizing that strategic data management can be a game-changer in enhancing our competitive edge. This responsibility does not just entail managing data, but unlocking actionable, scalable insights that are transforming the way we empower athletes worldwide.

My journey leading up to this point has been diverse and intensive. Before my current undertaking, I excelled in my role within Under Armour’s Global Infrastructure Technology and Operations, where I made significant strides following my transition from CohnReznick, a management consulting organization. There, my leadership was instrumental in managing sophisticated technology integrations post-merger, institutionalizing IT and security practice, and revolutionizing client interactions and business operations.

One of the most transformative eras of my career was the 15 years spent nurturing my technology consulting company, Marnic Technologies. During this period, I honed my skills in steering Fortune 50 companies through complex technology transformations, especially in the Banking, Finance, and Medical Services sectors. A notable achievement was developing secure, first and second-generation online application platforms for a Fortune 50 financial institution, significantly enhancing their digital interaction with high-net-worth individuals.

What fundamentally drives me are the core values I have adhered to throughout my career: integrity, continuous learning, and a profound commitment to nurturing relationships, whether with family, colleagues, or the broader community. These principles are the compass that guides my leadership approach, influencing how I make decisions and collaborate with others.

My educational journey, earning a bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon and an MBA from Duke University, has been foundational in shaping my technical acumen and business savvy.

Outside the professional sphere, I am passionate about giving back, actively engaging in community upliftment, mentoring emerging leaders, and preserving my deep cultural connections with my homeland, Haiti. These aspects of my life reinforce my belief that impactful leadership is holistic and far-reaching.

Data literacy is a key enabler of the value and impact from data. How are you approaching this within your organization?

At Under Armour, I view advanced data literacy as more than just a skill – it is an integral part of our strategic roadmap. It plays a pivotal role in making informed decisions that align with our long-term vision.

Central to my role is embedding a profound data-centric culture throughout every layer of our organization. Rather than just using data, we aim to make it an inherent part of our corporate culture. Each success achieved through data-driven insights is not just acknowledged – it is celebrated, and every challenge encountered becomes a lesson, helping us refine our strategy.

Our approach hinges on three core tenets:

  • Data, with an emphasis on establishing the right architecture, systems, and standards.

  • Governance, which focuses on scalable processes and accountability.

  • Engagement, dedicated to leveraging predictive insights to drive our objectives forward.

Recognizing the varied skill levels across our teams, we have established a multifaceted training paradigm. From foundational courses to intricate analytical workshops, our objective is to cater to the diverse proficiency levels within our organization, always with a keen focus on reinforcing accountability. This culminates annually in our Data and Analytics Summit, where we bring all levels of the data community together to showcase and learn the art of the possible around data.

A crucial aspect of our strategy is the assortment of data tools at our disposal. I have been at the forefront of integrating a suite of tools that range from intuitive dashboards for beginners to sophisticated analytical software for our experts. The intent is clear: to democratize data, making it accessible and actionable for all. This initiative has been driven as “Program DNA” (Data and Analytics), driving at the core that data and analytics need to be in our cultural DNA.

The Data Community Center of Excellence is one of our crowning achievements. It is a hub where data champions from different departments converge. These champions are more than just data aficionados – they are influencers who are spearheading a grassroots movement, promoting data empowerment in their functional domains. They bridge the gap between the granular needs of their departments and our overarching data and analytics vision.

In conclusion, data literacy and stewardship at Under Armour is a shared responsibility. Every team member, regardless of their role, is entrusted with maintaining the integrity of their data. It is a collaborative effort that goes beyond ensuring data quality – it is about instilling a holistic understanding of data’s expansive reach, weaving data literacy seamlessly into the very fabric of our organizational culture. Our journey, fueled by leadership and driven by teammate collaboration, stands as a testament to our commitment to being at the forefront of data innovation.

What role do you play in building and delivering conventional AI solutions, including machine learning models? Are you involved in your organization’s adoptions of generative AI?

As the senior leader of our organization’s data and analytics strategy, I oversee a team that has been integral in owning and managing conventional artificial intelligence solutions. These AI solutions have been in production for years, consistently driving value and contributing significantly to our business success. My role involves ensuring that these established AI systems continue to perform optimally and evolve in line with emerging technologies and business needs. Part of this responsibility is to oversee the governance of our AI initiatives, inclusive of the evolving area of generative AI (genAI).

Collaborating with other stakeholders, I contribute to a governance model that upholds ethical standards, aligns with our organizational values, and ensures responsible use of AI across the enterprise. In addition to internal development, we actively engage with external partners to leverage their scale and capabilities. This approach enhances our capacity to implement sophisticated AI solutions more efficiently, thereby augmenting our existing AI infrastructure and expertise.

Central to my role is aligning AI solutions with our business strategy. This involves exploring and implementing AI applications that not only drive efficiency and scalability but also align with specific business use cases. The focus is always on delivering measurable business value through these technologies. Overall, my responsibility extends beyond the adoption of new AI technologies. It encompasses the stewardship of our existing AI assets, ensuring they continue to evolve and add value, while also steering our organization towards innovative, responsible, and strategic use of emerging AI technologies like genAI. This balanced approach is key to maintaining our competitive edge and driving sustained business growth.

Have you set out a vision for data? If so, what is it aiming for and does it embrace the whole organization or just the data function?

My vision for data is comprehensive and all-encompassing. The primary goal is to create a foundation where every decision made within our organization is data informed. The linchpin of this strategy is the concept of the fly wheel – a self-reinforcing cycle where each element enhances and propels the next.

At the heart of our strategy is the integration of processes and practices specifically designed to manage and curate data, ensuring it is accurate and timely. This is closely tied with a robust data governance framework, ensuring the reliability and integrity of the data at our disposal. Our suite of cutting-edge data processing tools and systems further aids in the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data, allowing us to glean actionable insights with greater efficiency.

The true champions of this vision, however, are our data citizens. Comprising of both data analysts, who dive deep into the data to extract meaningful patterns, and data scientists, who leverage advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning models to forecast and predict, our data citizens are at the frontline of turning raw data into valuable insights. Recognizing the paramount importance of their role, we have committed to their continuous empowerment. We do this through ongoing data literacy training, ensuring that they are not only equipped with the latest tools and techniques but also possess a keen understanding of their application in various business contexts.

By fostering this ecosystem, we aim to seamlessly interlink data-driven insights into our strategic and operational decisions. This not only increases our organization’s agility and responsiveness but also ensures that every department benefits from a holistic, data-centric approach.

In summary, my vision embraces not just the data function, but the entirety of our organization, embedding a data-centric mindset into the core of our organizational DNA. As a leader, my role is to drive this strategy, ensuring its effective execution and measuring our progress continually. Through this, we believe we can navigate the complexities of today’s business landscape with greater precision and foresight.
