Phani Ravindra Kaligotla, Director, AI & Data Strategy, Mastercard

Phani Ravindra Kaligotla is Director of AI and Data Strategy at Mastercard, where he focuses on driving innovation at the intersection of technology, data, and financial services.

His career began with hands-on work in the development and deployment of advanced AI solutions, building a strong technical foundation in applying machine learning at scale. Early on, Phani developed a perspective that effective AI leadership is defined by the ability to translate complex technology into meaningful business outcomes, improving products, enhancing customer experiences, and increasing operational efficiency.

His role evolved from technical delivery into strategic leadership. He has led the design and execution of enterprise-level AI and data strategies, with a particular emphasis on embedding a data-centric mindset across the organisation. Phani’s work extends beyond deploying technology to enabling teams across the business to make better, faster decisions using data at scale.

A defining aspect of Phani’s leadership has been building and sustaining high-performing teams. He is deeply committed to recruiting, mentoring, and developing diverse data scientists and engineers, and to fostering a culture that balances technical excellence with responsible innovation. This focus on people and governance underpins his view that lasting impact from AI depends on trust, adoption and long-term sustainability.

Phani has maintained a consistent focus on ensuring that AI delivers governed, scalable, and widely adopted value, shaping individual initiatives and how organisations and industries operate.

As a data and AI leader, which traits and skills do you think matter most, and which of those have been most influential for you in your current position?

“In my experience, the business-first mindset and exceptional communication have been the most influential.

“Why? In our organisation, the greatest hurdle to scaling AI was not technical capability, but organisational adoption and strategic alignment. By rigorously applying a business-first filter to every project, we ensured resources were dedicated only to initiatives with clear, measurable ROI, drastically improving our success rate.

“Concurrently, using communication to consistently articulate the P&L value of data science, rather than just discussing accuracy metrics, secured critical executive buy-in and enabled the seamless integration of AI solutions into core business workflows, fostering a truly data-centric culture.”

Reflecting on your career, what is one non-traditional piece of advice (outside of technical skills) you would give to an aspiring data or AI leader aiming for the C-suite?

“Stop selling predictions; start selling insurance.

“The core mandate of the C-suite is to manage enterprise risk and secure predictable future growth. Technical leaders often focus their communication on the accuracy and predictive power of their models (eg, ‘Our model is 95% accurate’). While important, this is a technical metric, not a C-suite concern.

“Instead, shift your framing to how your data and AI strategy de-risks the business.

“Think about risk mitigation. Present your AI systems not as mere forecasters, but as automated risk reduction engines. For example, instead of saying, ‘We predict customer churn,’ say, ‘We have engineered a system that proactively insures our high-value customer base against $X million in potential annual revenue loss.’

“Additionally, focus on how your AI governance framework is the enterprise policy that protects the company from ethical, regulatory, and reputational failures, which are catastrophic C-suite risks.

“By changing your narrative from a technical predictor to a strategic risk insurer, you align directly with the executive agenda and demonstrate a clear, mature understanding of enterprise leadership.”
