Phil Boon is Chief Data Officer at Coventry Building Society, where he leads the organisation’s data agenda with a focus on foundations and enabling data to become a strategic asset.
He began his career in commercial roles, where decision-making was often constrained by slow access and inconsistent data quality. Many choices relied on anecdote rather than evidence, an issue that became more acute as he moved into digital roles requiring timely, reliable insight to deliver effective customer experiences. These early experiences shaped his conviction that data quality, accessibility and trust are fundamental to organisational performance.
Phil transitioned into data leadership at Coventry Building Society. His remit centres on establishing the core building blocks of a mature data capability, including governance, risk management, and culture, while ensuring data is usable and valuable across the business.
Phil’s leadership philosophy emphasises clarity, trust, and capability. He focuses on creating conditions where data can be used confidently and responsibly, supporting regulatory expectations and strategic ambition.
As a data and AI leader, which traits and skills do you think matter most, and which of those have been most influential for you in your current position?
“The most critical traits are leadership, clarity, and adaptability. Technical expertise matters, but the ability to simplify complexity and build trust is what drives impact.
“In my organisation, the most influential skill has been strategic leadership: setting a clear direction and holding to it, while adapting when external factors demand change. When leadership is strong, specialists can focus on what they do best and collaborate effectively across the business.
“Data leadership is ultimately about influence by creating alignment, fostering a culture of curiosity, and ensuring that data and AI are seen as enablers, not obstacles.”
Reflecting on your career, what is one non-traditional piece of advice (outside of technical skills) you would give to an aspiring data or AI leader aiming for the C-suite?
“Commit to growing as a person, not just as a professional. Technical skills will get you started, but self-awareness and resilience will take you further. Learn from every experience, be critical of yourself, but not overly harsh.
“Invest in relationships and communication. The ability to influence, listen, and adapt is what differentiates great leaders. Data and AI are complex fields, but your role is to make them accessible and relevant.
“Finally, embrace patience without getting comfortable. Building trust and capability takes time but needs drive.”
