Stephen Deadman, Global Deputy Chief Privacy Officer, Facebook

Path to power

I started my career as a trainee lawyer with a law firm where I got my first taste of tech. Fascinated by mobile, I decided, on qualifying, to move in-house to Vodafone. This was 1997, the start of the mobile boom that would re-shape the way we communicate. I joined Facebook in January 2015 in my current role to create Facebook’s international privacy policy team.

What has been the highlight of your career in the industry to date?

Some personal highlights of my career at Vodafone: I worked on the launch of the world’s first fully-fledged pre-pay business model, Pay as you talk, which triggered the explosion in mobile growth; helped develop and launch M-PESA in Africa, the world’s most successful mobile money transfer service; created Vodafone’s global privacy programme and launched Vodafone’s first transparency report on human rights, one of the most extensive corporate reports on transparency into government access to private sector data.
