Vikram Somaya is Chief Data and Analytics Officer at Kenvue, where he leads enterprise data and analytics strategy to support transformation across a complex global consumer goods ecosystem. His career spans startups, media, and consumer packaged goods, giving him a broad perspective on how data and AI can drive business change.
Vikram began his career in New York’s Silicon Alley, working with early data startups at a time when digital was rapidly emerging. This period, shaped by hands-on experience, intense pace, and strong mentorship, provided a foundational understanding of how data could be used to create value in real time.
He later spent a significant part of his career in large media organizations, often helping establish Chief Data or Chief Data and Analytics Officer roles while also contributing to digital product development. In an industry where data underpins both content and commercial models, Vikram worked to embed analytics and early AI capabilities into decision-making.
In recent years, Vikram has focused on the consumer packaged goods sector, including his current role at Kenvue, where he has helped shape data leadership functions across highly complex, global value chains. His experience spans interconnected domains—from supply and manufacturing to marketing and customer engagement—across multiple markets.
Across all phases of his career, Vikram has developed a perspective that data leadership is fundamentally about synthesizing information and human behavior to drive meaningful organizational transformation.
As a data and AI leader, which traits and skills do you think matter most, and which of those have been most influential for you in your current position?
“I think being a right brain/left brain leader is necessary for data and AI leadership. If you’re just technical or just a people leader, it’s simply not good enough. You need to be able to decipher a complex technical landscape and have the ability to influence and guide effectively throughout your organization.
“Being able to communicate simply, powerfully, and consistently is also a necessary skill for this job that’s often underrated.”
Reflecting on your career, what is one non-traditional piece of advice (outside of technical skills) you would give to an aspiring data or AI leader aiming for the C-suite?
“Find a way to practice or learn how to speak publicly. Go to an improv class. Perhaps join the toastmasters or find a vocal and speech coach. Learning how to communicate effectively in person is a primary skill for the C-suite.”
