Wade Munsie is Chief Data and AI Officer at Heathrow, where he leads the organisation’s data and AI agenda with a focus on strategic value, scale, and long-term impact.
His career spans a wide range of data and technology leadership roles, including analyst, consultant, Chief Data Officer, Chief Information Officer and consulting partner. Wade has served as CDO in multiple Fortune 500 organisations, spent time as a CIO in a start-up environment and held a partnership role at one of the world’s leading consulting firms.
Wade has built and led large, high-performing teams, navigated difficult people decisions, and delivered substantial business value from data, often measured in the hundreds of millions. He has witnessed successive waves of technology rise and fall, reinforcing a pragmatic view of innovation grounded in outcomes rather than novelty.
A defining shift in Wade’s leadership has been the transition from operating as a data professional in support of the business to acting as a corporate executive who brings deep data expertise to strategic decision-making. This evolution has reshaped his focus from service delivery to value creation, and from tactical execution to long-term transformation.
At Heathrow, Wade applies this perspective to embed data and AI into the heart of organisational strategy, ensuring they are used not as specialist capabilities, but as core drivers of performance, resilience and growth.
As a data and AI leader, which traits and skills do you think matter most, and which of those have been most influential for you in your current position?
To be effective in a modern AI world, being uncomfortable needs to be okay. Traditional risk adverse governance or centralised everything no longer has a place. We need to be ok with letting go of control.
“We need to be more curious and courageous than ever to deliver the business strategy in the most effective way. Making bold but educated decisions will separate good from great and create competitive advantages for your organisation.
“AI and data leaders need to be ruthlessly focused on value. Creating value is the only way to become sustainable. Cost based services will always come under fire when things get tough.
“Lastly, having a good dose of EQ defines a great leader. Without people, you can’t deliver anything. Always strive to be the Best Place to Work.”
What is the one non-traditional piece of advice that you would give to an AI or data leaders aspiring to get to do where you are at the moment?
“Take time to reflect your most important decisions and communications. I try to write my most important replies to wicked problems in the afternoon or evening and not send them until the next morning.
“It’s amazing what a good sleep and possibly a glass of wine can do to calm a situation in your mind to change a narrative.”
