Wade Munsie, Chief Technology Officer, Controlant

Describe your career to date

 

As a career long data professional, I have worked in several of the most well-known brands in world including Sony, Warner, Three, British Telecom, and most recently as Chief Data Officer at GSK and Royal Mail where I led both full-scale transformations and greenfield startups.

 

About 18 months ago, I embarked on a different journey as a partner at the world’s most prestigious consulting firm, McKinsey where I set about bringing my data expertise and experiences into client engagements.

 

Very recently, I was approached by a small company with a big vision and asked to help them scale into something special. I have joined Controlant as Chief Technology Officer in charge of all aspects of technology, data, and artificial intelligence.

 

This opportunity is one that I am very excited about and allows me to change look at data through a CTO lens for the first time. As a member of the Executive Board, I will be able to influence strategy through data and AI directly as well as helping create products and services leveraging the best of data and technology for some of the world’s biggest companies.

Data literacy is a key enabler of the value and impact from data. How are you approaching this within your organisation?

 

I am just getting started with this company. Part of the agenda I set before accepting the role includes not only a strict value focus across both data and technology, but I set out an agenda to the Board of being truly data driven and not technology led.

 

I will have the chance to not only set the tone for the Board but be part of that tone to influence decision making but also do it while being responsible for technology, security, ethics, and compliance.

Have you set out a vision for data? If so, what is it aiming for and does it embrace the whole organisation or just the data function?

 

It is very early days, but as I have already mentioned, my vision for data is to be directly involved in delivering the corporate strategy. The responsibility I take on is much greater than the data or IT functions and even greater than Controlant.

 

Controlant comes with a noble cause that impacts the lives of millions of people worldwide and that is not something that I take on lightly and in fact, the main reason I left McKinsey for. After all, you don’t take a job in Iceland, just before winter, without a very good reason!
